Introduction To Prospective Members

Jolly Roger Sailing Club was formed in 1946 by a group of youngsters for the sole purpose to better enjoy sailing. Since then the club has prospered and grown to over 200 members, but the primary theme of this club remains the same: to promote and encourage sailing and racing for pleasure and sport, to foster good fellowship among its members and to provide the facilities for both. Jolly Roger Sailing Club is the only exclusive sailing club in Toledo. The only powerboats we have are our Race Committee Boats.

MEMBERSHIP: Membership is divided into categories of Active Members (boat owners), Social Members (non-boat owners) and Associate Members. Active Members are subdivided into Senior (23 and over) and Junior (22 and under).

Launching, mooring and dry sailing fees are set each year prior to the sailing season and vary according to boat size. Reservation for space is made through the Dock Chairman. The size of boat is limited by existing facilities, and due to present conditions, dock and bulkhead space is not guaranteed.

All Active Members are required to work sixteen (16) hours a year or pay for them at a rate of $18.00 per hour. Work hours are to be reported to the Vice Commodore. All fees are pro-rated from date of acceptance into the club. If you have any special talent (tradesman, typist, computer, etc.) which you would like to make available to the club, fill them in on the Application Form and let it be known to the appropriate Committee Chairman.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: The prospective member should complete his/her Application Form and submit it, along with his/her one time only Initiation Fee at a General Meeting. His/her application will be read and he/she will be introduced to the membership (this is called the first reading). He/she must attend the following Board of Trustees Meeting where his/her application will again be read (this is called the second reading). He/she will have the application read again at the next General Meeting and the membership present will vote on acceptance of membership into the club during the next General meeting (this is called the third reading). Attendance is required at these three consecutive meetings. During this period, applicants are invited to take part in all club activities.

CLUB MEETINGS: General Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month and Board of Trustees Meetings are on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

CLUB RENTAL: The clubhouse is available for private parties by members at a rental fee of $75.00, with a refundable deposit of $100.00. Contact the House Chairman for availability.

FAMILY MEMBERSHIP: One-family Active Membership in the club entitles all family members to enjoy the club's facilities and are eligible to compete in club races for prizes, with some restrictions.

RACING SCHEDULES: The club provides scheduled races every Wednesday and Thursday night during the summer for all classes. The club participates at various A.Y.C. sponsored regattas each weekend and holds three of its own A.Y.C. regattas throughout the sailing season. Our club is nationally known in racing circles because of the many class champions we have produced. We have active racing in Interlakes, Hobie Cats, Lasers and Catalina 22's. We also have an active P.H.R.F. and J.A.M. Fleet for cruising auxiliaries who also race on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The club also sponsors long distance races for this fleet.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: We hold many different types of social gathering throughout the off-season, highlighted by our annual Awards Banquet/ Commodore's Ball dinner-dance held in November. Information on all activities are published in our monthly club newsletter, "The Skulldugger".

This letter only touches lightly on the rules of the club. Upon acceptance into the club, each member is given the clubs' Constitution to read thoroughly. Any questions concerning these bylaws should be directed to the Board of Trustees of Club Officers. Hopefully this introductory letter has enlightened you on the functions of our club. We hope you will join us in our quest to enjoy the great sport of sailing!

An application can be obtained at the first General Meeting and completed at that time. The initiation fee must accompany the application. General Meetings are held at Jolly Roger Sailing Club on the second Tuesday of each month. Board Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Both meetings begin at 8:00 P.M. At each of these three meetings, the application will be read to the Membership, or Board, by the Membership Chairman. The sponsors will speak for the applicant at the second General Meeting, at which time, the Membership will discuss the applicant's petition for membership and then vote on this application.
